On 15th April 1973 a "Calder Valley" three car class 110 dmu disappears into New Mills tunnel heading for the Hope Valley line with a service for Sheffield and probably beyond. On the left in the New Mills turn back tunnel as we called it, because it was used to turn back the 2 car dmus back to Manchester is a class 104 dmu, this tunnel is 197 yards long and was only half bricked up at the other end, officially called Hayfield Tunnel and was the start of the 2.5 mile branch to Hayfield which closed to all traffic on 03/01/70. Today the tunnel is trackless but the tunnel mouth is still there, at the other end of the tunnel is the start of the Sett Valley trail which is on the old track bed to Hayfield. Andrew J Crowther.

Speeding through Chinley with a Manchester Piccadilly service on 18th April 1973 is a 1961 built BRC&W built class 110 'Calder Valley' 3 car dmu set. These units were an updated version of the class 104 but powered by the much more powerful Rolls Royce C6NFLH engines , two per driving car and designed for the route they were built for, the Lancashire & Yorkshire mainline, hence the nickname 'Calder Valley'. Saturday 14 July 1973 at 09:10 and a BRCW Class 110 'Calder Valley' dmu is at the front of four units at Copley. My notes from the time said this was a Halifax Wakes Week additional service to Cleethorpes from Hebden Bridge. Neither the headcode, nor the destination blind are correct if this is the case. Mr Deltic.

Sorry, can't get this one in focus correctly, guess it was an unexpected shot when this appeared, anyway its 31147 with a failed four-car Class 110 DMU in tow arriving in Leeds on 22nd March 1975. I think it was actually in service rather than being towed back to Neville Hill. The KDH Archive.
