104 DMU

6th September 1980

Set: 54

This four-car dmu formation on September 6, 1980 is headed by a Class 104 Birmingham RC&W Co driving trailer. I think I can identify this as E56187. It carries a Norwich set identity (54) and its partner is a class 105 Cravens vehicle, a 114 is on the back. The train is headed for Doncaster via Spalding, hence the train is crossing off the main (Peterborough) line into a branch platform. It probably originated at Great Yarmouth. This route closed in 1982. The large Whitemoor yard can be seen behind March North Junction signalbox. Jeremy Chapter.

104 DMU

13th September 1980

Newton Heath Class 104 'White Line' Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50472, was lead car of a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service, awaiting custom at Layton on September 13th 1980. These 3-car Class 104 sets were the mainstay of such services in the 1970's and early 1980's. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

13th September 1980

In the days when the Coast Line from Kirkham to Blackpool South was still a double track railway, a Class 104 2-Car DMU with M56175 leading, calls at a run-down looking Lytham Station on 13th September 1980 whilst working the Kirkham to Blackpool South shuttle service. A far-cry from the days when this line was busy with express, residential and excursion traffic, how on earth in the smart and tidy town of Lytham was the station allowed to wither away like this. Worse was to follow - in 1983 the Coast Line was reduced to single track. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

13th September 1980

Three car class 104 set 50560 - 59225 - 50579 on the fuel road at Stratford depot on 13/Sep/1980. They had recently been transferred from Norwich and 50560 still has its Norwich destination blind as evidenced by showing 'King's Lynn', which was not present on the Stratford blind. Both power cars worked for a couple more years before being withdrawn from Stratford in early 1982. The trailer car fared better, being transferred a couple of times until ending its days at Ayr in 1987. Interestingly 59225 was delivered new in a 4-car set which included 50579. Robert Chilton.

104 DMU

16th September 1980

A once familiar scene that was played out daily from the Manchester Victoria of old - a well-worn location with an equally well-worn first generation Diesel Multiple Unit. With most of the doors left wide open, a Class 104 BRCW DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second M50455 leading, was awaiting departure for Blackpool North on September 16th 1980. These units, all allocated just up the line at Newton Heath Depot, dominated the services to Blackpool & Southport in the 1970's and into the early 1980's. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

24th September 1980

E50543 + E59224 + E50548 at Darlington on 24/9/80. An ex-South Gosforth BRCW Class 104 during it's short life at Darlington. The 2 northern bay platforms at Darlington, by then just used by Darlington to Bishop Auckland trains, were done away with, one infilled for car parking and the other by the realignment of the down line out of Platform 4. The Bishop Auckland service was extended as through workings to and from Saltburn (or Whitby). The 08 in the background is 08004, the short little bay that the 08 often stood in between station pilot duties is long gone now too. John Carter.
