Ex-works Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. class 104 DMU unit Nos.E50583-E59225-E50579 forming the 10:10 service from Ely to Norwich getting underway from Brandon station, Suffolk, on 24th September 1979. Gordon Edgar.
A BRC&W class 104 DMU (M56175 closest) waits for it's departure time at Rose Hill (Marple) with a service to Manchester Piccadilly. Rose Hill was the first stop on the once on the through route from Marple Wharf Junc to Macclesfield a distance of 11 miles, which closed to all traffic on the 5th January 1970 (now the Middlewood Way footpath) with this short section to Rose Hill being retained. 29th September 1979. A Class 104 DMU, the label in the first passenger window reads 'To Doncaster Works'. On the right is freshly painted Class 101 E50182, the TBS behind is presumably E59078. Both were transferred from Darlington to Norwich in November 1979 and seem to have stopped in Doncaster Works en-route for refurbishment being released in blue/grey in December. On a warm June 28th 1980 with the train crew looking on, a six-car BRCW Class 104 'White-Liner' DMU was stood at Poulton-Le-Fylde with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service. Driving Motor Composite Lavatory Car M50530 was leading the formation. Standard fare along the Manchester-Blackpool route from the late 1960's until around 1982, they were part of the large allocation of 104's at Newton Heath Depot. The well-worn sets were replaced by Swindon Class 120's cascaded from various parts of the country, a temporary measure until the new Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet appeared in sufficient quantities.
