Blackpool North was a frequent haunt for Class 104s. In the station when this shot was taken on the 3rd August 1979 were 50524 + 59183 + 50475, 50504 + 59160 + 50452, 50477 + 59185 + 50529 and 50517 + 59173 + 50465. Robert Frise.

104 DMU

5th August 1979

A view looking East at a basic Colne station, terminus of the East Lancashire line from Preston on August 5th 1979. A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M50498 & M50446 was preparing to return to Preston. Colne once had a three platform station, a large goods yard with a warehouse, coal sidings and a carriage shed. The fortunes of this once busy location declined when the route from Colne to Skipton was closed in 1970. Worse was to come when 'economies' saw the line towards Preston singled to Chaffers Siding just East of Nelson. Colne station became unstaffed in 1971 and the demolition of all the remaining railway structures followed swiftly, leaving the bus shelter mediocrity seen in this view. Over 40 years on, the line is still single track, the station has been tided-up, but is still unstaffed. As for the route to Skipton, which if reinstated would become a useful trans-pennine link, it remains just a 'maybe one day'. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

12th August 1979

Having arrived at journeys end on one of the well-patronised services from Manchester Victoria, and with Driving Motor Brake Second M50474 bringing up the rear of a six-car formation, alighted passengers were making their way out of the station at Blackpool North on an overcast August 12th 1979. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

26th August 1979

BRCW Class 104 DMU's were Sunday resting stabled at Buxton station on August 26th 1979. The nearest three-car set was formed of cars M50482, M59138 & M50460. Buxton Depot had a sizeable allocation of 104's from the late 1950's until the early 1980's. The leading car in this view, Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M50482, eventually ended its working life at Preston on January 19th 1986, when working as a two-car set formed of M53482 & M53433, it had a head-on collision with Class 47 47111 just South of Preston station following braking problems. 53482 lanquished for some time in Dock Street Sidings at Preston covered over with a tarpaulin until it was scrapped on-site. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

2nd September 1979

Buxton station on Saturday 2 September 1978 with a 6-car Class 104 formation about to depart. According to my notes these will be 50427/59138/50440, 50421/59148/50490 and 59198. There are 3 trailer cars listed here, but only 2 3-car units in my photo and I can only guess that the "extra" trailer was visible at the diesel depot. The Class 08 on the right will be 08611 and a Class 40 is also just visible; there were 4 Class 40s at Buxton on this day. Lewis Bevan.

104 DMU

16th September 1979

50495 seen languishing in Newton Heath, 16th September 1979. It had moved from Derby in June and would leave for scrapping in November. David Hills.

104 DMU

18th September 1979

The Newton Heath based Class 104 3-Car DMU sets embellished with a white stripe were the mainstay of services between Blackpool North & Manchester Victoria in the 1970's. In a scene that was repeated daily, M50472 brings up the rear of Manchester Victoria bound service as it calls at Chorley on a warm afternoon on September 18th 1979. The station buildings in this view were swept away in the 1980's when the station was reconstructed. Beyond the now-removed Signalbox is the former Goods Yard, now part of the the station car park. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

19th September 1979

Normally used on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North services, one of the three-Car Newton Heath allocated Class 104 sets complete with its white bodyside stripe, was working the Kirkham to Blackpool South shuttle service on September 19th 1979. M50474 arrives from Kirkham along a route that was still double track into the magnificent station at St-Annes-On-The-Sea. Martyn Hilbert.

Two Class 104 DMUs (the second a 'white-striper') in Manchester Victoria with a Blackpool service on 22 September 1979. Brian Daniels.
