High up in the Pennines, a Gloucester Class 100 Twin comprising Driving Trailer Composite (downgraded to Driving Trailer 2nd) M56109 and Motor Brake 2nd M50354 await departure from platform 3 at Stalybridge with the 11:45 service to Stockport. Saturday 9th March 1983. Having grown up with Gloucester twins in eastern Scotland, I was always glad to renew my acquaintance with the type though I have to admit I regarded them with some disdain when they were everyday fare. Set: EXPDM352
Experimental DMU no. EXP DM 352, consisting of cars 78601 (nearest, formerly 50521) and 78851 (formerly 50446) both of which had had one of their two 150hp engines removed as a proposed cost saving measure, seen at Stalybridge in May 1984. It is said that the unit was underpowered - although it should have had the same power as a 'conventional' Class 101-109 power-trailer or 4-car unit - and the only other cars to have this modification carried out subsequently were the Metropolitan-Cammell Class 111s, which had 180hp Rolls-Royce engines. This unit was one of the few Class 104s to receive blue & grey livery, plus the black strip below the cab windows was presumably to mark it out as non-standard. Graeme Phillips Collection.

9th August 1986
After bashing Peaks over the Pennines, and sampling the ale in Stalybridge station bar I took the opportunity to photograph the little-recorded local DMU service to Stockport on 9 August 1986. The 19:18 service was being operated by a tired looking Class 104 B.R.C. & W. DMU 53451 + 53518, seen in the bay platform 3, bathed in the late afternoon sunshine, with the hills in the distance. I made a number of tape recordings to capture the railway scene of the time and you canexperience the audio magic of this vintage DMU making its characteristic sounds. Class 104 set N679 with 53522 (still carrying Network South East branding at the rear from a previous allocation) and presumably 53541 at Stalybridge in April 1988 on what is probably a Stockport service. The KDH Archive.

Newton Heath based class 104 2-car DMU set no. N674 (presumably 53474 + 53427) sits in the bay platform at Stalybridge with the local service to Stockport on May 3, 1988. This shot was taken when there was still 16 trains a day each way. It would then become a parliamentry service with one train a week on a Friday in one direction only leaving Stockport at 09.22. By running this token service the railway did not have to go through the lengthy statutory close notice period for a line closure. The route became largely obsolete when the Windsor link line opened in West Manchester. Adrian Nicholls.
