Complete with its West Yorkshire MetroTrain PTE branding, Manchester Longsight Set L0241 was stood at Hooton with the 12.08 to Chester on a damp February 25th 1993. The nearest car was Class 101 Driving Motor Brake Second E53202, the other is a Class 108. The set was one of many to get an extended lease of life and a shuffle from one side of the Pennines to the other to cover for the then ailing and unreliable almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. The third rail from Rock Ferry along the former LMS/GWR main line was extended to Hooton in 1985, with a DMU providing a connection at Hooton for the eight mile run to Chester. Stood on what was once part of the four-track LMS/GWR joint line from Chester to Birkenhead, Regional Railways Class 101, 101681 (51506 + 51228) was forming the onward service from Hooton to Chester on September 1st 1993. Just visible in the adjacent platform is the EMU that has arrived from Liverpool Central. The third rail was extended to Hooton from Liverpool in 1985, and electric services worked through to Chester from 4th October 1993 just after a month when this image was recorded. Martyn Hilbert.

On the one-time four track section of the LMS/GWR joint line from Birkenhead, Regional Railways Class 101 101678 (51210 & 53746) was stood in the bay at Hooton with a service to Chester on September 1st 1993. At the time, Hooton was the limit of electrification from Liverpool Central and Class 508 set 508 117 is just visible on the extreme left of this view. The extension of the live rails southwards from Hooton to Chester was underway with electric services commencing just over a month after this image was recorded, the start date being October 4th 1993.
