A Class 101 DMU at Gateshead East, 19/04/1980. Containing cars E56089 + E51214, it calls with a service to Sunderland. Typical of the period, the train shows a mismatch of Refurbished and Blue + Grey Livery. Unfortunately, the attractive Refurbished Livery was found to get dirty rather quickly, so it was decided to outshop refurbished vehicles in Blue + Grey livery, which had previously been for Inter-City / Cross-Country vehicles only. In this view, 56089 also carries the logo of Tyne & Wear PTE within the blue band, as well as a tail lamp. Gateshead East station, situated between Newcastle and Heworth, closed on 23/11/1981, replaced by the Tyneside Metro. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Two twin sets, E56367 leading (note the red patches on the rear passenger door) and paired with a Cravens DMBS, working with a Class 101 twin, arrive from Middlesbrough on 10 May 1980. The decrepit station closed in November 1981, replaced by that for the Tyne & Wear Metro. Image by Charles Dean. Kevin Lane Collection.

Class 101 DMU cars E51205 + E54399 are seen at Gateshead East station with a South Shields-Newcastle service on Saturday 02/05/1981. Situated just on the south side of the River Tyne after leaving Newcastle, this station closed on 23/11/1981, replaced by the new Gateshead Interchange station on the Tyneside Metro system. Services on the South Shields branch ceased soon after in May 1982, for the same reason. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Cars E56429 E51282 are seen at Gateshead East approaching Newcastle with a service from South Shields on 30/5/81, the last day of British Rail services on the South Tyneside branch prior to conversion to the Tyneside Metro system. Against the backdrop of Newcastle's skyline, a Class 47 can be seen approaching the station on the ECML. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Cravens DMU at Gateshead on 6 June 1981 with "Middlesbrough" on the destination blind. The number on the closest vehicle appears to be E56425 which was withdrawn the same month, so why was it freshly repainted? George Woods.
E50209 + E56408 leads another Met-Camm at calling at the soon to close Gateshead station on October 10, 1981. It was replaced by the underground Metro station several hundred yards away. The old station here would have been much better placed for the regeneration of the riverside area if it had been retained. Unfortunately the slide has evidence of the sticking Zenit-E shutter John Carter.
