Bathgate to Buchanan St. The Branch Line Society “Forth Clyde Wanderer” of 27th August 1977 took a refurbished Met Camm DMU over various rare routes in central Scotland. One of the photostops was at the former Bathgate Upper station, where the destination of Glasgow Buchanan St on SC51464 would have further confused any surprised locals. Murray Liston.

 DMU

29th March 1986

Set: 326

On 29th March 1986, 5 days after rail services returned to Bathgate, two Metro-Cammell 3 car sets, with 101326 leading, head away from the town with the 1203 service to Edinburgh. Initial duties on the line were shared between class 143 Pacer units and the indigenous 101s. Not surprisingly, the latter eventually took over all the services. Despite appearances this section was not double track, the line nearer the camera was for freight, primarily automotive traffic. The station was to close in 2010 when the through line to Airdrie was completed with a new station constructed nearby. Bruce Galloway.

 DMU

This station was replaced by a two platform through station further east in 2010 as part of the re-opening of the Bathgate to Airdrie line. Kenneth Leiper.

From Birmingham to Bathgate 2. Services restarted from Edinburgh to Bathgate in 1986 and used a variety of worn out DMUs shuttling to and from a new single platform terminus station built in the former goods yard. In August 1987 we see BRCW class 104 DMU 53464 still wearing its M prefix following its transfer from Newton Heath 6 months earlier. It was running with blue / grey centre car 59168. This station closed in 2010 when the through route to Airdrie was reopened and electrified and a new station constructed nearby. Murray Liston.

 DMU

28th August 1987

Set: 101364

DMU set 101 364 in Bathgate station while waiting to form the 15.09 to Edinburgh Waverley on August 28, 1987. This was one of the most successful reopenings on British Rail's ScotRail network which rejoined the passenger network on the 24th March 1986. The DMBS closest is not one of the regular vehicles in 101364, it is a trailer brake set that normally has two DMSs. It could be 51244 - see the comment. Adrian Nicholls.
