In early June '62 the set was re-equipped with a new form of battery that offered several advantages. But a series of breakdowns and minor fires saw the unit being reported as withdrawn in August '62, and replaced by a second DMU. The set was sent to Hyndland depot in Glasgow for a decision on its future. The set is believed to have returned north again, and it was still mentioned in the 1965 working timetable.

The line was to close in 1966. The set was put into store at Cowlairs until claimed by the RTC.
