Strathspey Railway |
The NYMR bought three buffet cars, 59098/9 becoming camping coaches
and 79443 a static buffet, all in Goathland station. These were
disposed of in 1994, 79443 to Bo'ness and the others to MC Metals.
79441 was once preserved on the Strathspey Railway. It
was extensively refurbished internally, this being sponsored by a whisky firm which gave it
its name "Glenfiddich". Still containing blue asbestos, it was cut up
at MC Metals in 1992. 51017/43
& 59404 were bought by the Swindon Diesel Preservation Society in
1983 and kept at the Caledonian Railway in Angus until sold to the
Scottish Railway Preservation Society in 1993.
Asbestos stripped in 1994, the
vehicles have now received a Heritage Lottery Fund award of £180,000 towards a
£325,000 project to restore them. The two power cars went to Lancastrian Carriage & Wagon's Heysham works for complete
restoration, but many problems were encountered and they returned to
Bo'ness unfinished. Further funding from the HLF has allowed 51043 to
go to the MRC for further work, with 51017 to follow. TC 59404 was
restored at Bo'ness by volunteers. The buffet
car will remain a future project.
