977860 was formerly 55028. It was converted to a sandite / route learned, then at the end of 2001 was partially converted to a second video unit for Balfour Beatty but never used as such. It was further converted in early 2005 as a route learner for South West Trains.

977860 (ex-55028) had it's sandite gear removed, a basic internal revamp, body repairs and a repaint at the Midland Railway Centre during Sep. - Dec. 2001. From there it went to Ashford for mechanical work with the intention of returning to the National Network as a second camera vehicle (with 977859) for Balfour Beatty Rail. The two vehicles were only leased by the firm, being owned by Railtrack who demanded they were painted into their livery. The decals on 977860 were to be applied at Ashford by the same firm that did the first one so that they matched. Below it is seen leaving the C&W shed at Butterley in the fading light of the 20th Dec. 01. Stuart Mackay

Balfour Beatty never used the vehicle, and it languished at Ashford for some time before being obtained by South West Trains as a route learner. It was overhauled by LNWR at Crewe and is seen here soon afterwards at Alresford on the Mid-Hants with 55003 on 13/5/05. Ian McDonald.
