In common with other DMU types, the TOPS numbers were
rationalised leaving them all as just Class 116s by 1980, and in 1983
the surviving cars in the 50xxx were numbered in the 53xxx range to
avoid clashing with Class 50 locomotives.

You will see that there are differing number of power cars and
trailers in the second/third batches. They were delivered as 3-cars
until the last two pairs in both cases.
