These were the first units built under the Modernisation Plan. The 50 sets were for the ER Lincoln area services. All but 50000/49 were built with two Leyland 150hp engines. From new 50049 had two of the then new Albion 230hp engines fitted. It then had an SE4 gearbox fitted which could be altered to automatic gearchanges by a simple change in the control circuits. Soon after, the rest of the power cars (except 50000) received the new equipment.

While strictly not part of Class 114, set 50000/56000 is included here as it is generally regarded as such. 50001 was actually the first to be built, and when 50000 came along it had two Rolls-Royce 238 hp engines and torque converter drives. It was tested exhautively with promising results, and led to this engine being used for future builds where appropriate, such as the Class 127s. 50000 was withdrawn in Oct. 67 as it was considered non-standard

In 1987 the remaining sets were transferred to Tyseley where they covered a lot of new ground. The fleet was gradually run down, until the last car was withdrawn in June 1992. Several sets had been converted to Parcels cars, which were all withdrawn by the end of 1990.
