56015 was new to 40A in late 2/57.

Withdrawn from passenger use in 7/89 and converted to parcels car 54904.

Then went into departmental use as 977776 paired with 977775 (50015). Used as an Advanced Passenger Train development and training coaches, then became route learning and inspection saloon vehicles, and finally they were used as an Automatic Train Protection Test Unit.

These photos, all by John Reddyhoff show, show some of the conversion work to the ATP train. The first two taken on 2/8/91 show the framework being assembled for the new partitions.

It was passed into EWS ownership, and spent a while stored at Thornaby until sold by tender to the Midland Railway Trust Railcar Group.
