56171 DMBS Llangollen Railway

The Chasewater Light Railway tendered in summer '81 for the former ER GM saloon, 50416/56171, and the vehicles left Stourton in August for repairs at Lincoln. It then passed through Tinsley on its way to Wolverhampton steel terminal in the September.

On 7/10/81 the vehicles went by road to Chasewater. On arrival they had no seats fitted, and were painted into the CLR DMU livery scheme of maroon. It was operative and planned to be in use in the summer of 1981.

The Chasewater Railway modified the interior of the trailer to provide some standard seating, a bar and a lounge area. The vehicle was used for several years on the line's steam hauled services, attached to Class 100 DTC 56301. The line bought a Clas 116 trailer in the early '90s to release the 109 trailer for restoration. The DMBS was used as a static buffet car with a kitchen and seated area. The engines were occasionally started to keep them in good order.

It was bought by the Llangollen Railcar Group, although initially it was sent for professional restoration at the Midland Railway Centre. This was aided with a £129,000 award from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The vehicles moved to the Llangollen Railway in late 2003, and were launched back into traffic in February 2004. Details about the restoration can be found at the Llangollen Railcars website.
