Further dieselisation of the Glasgow South side suburban services took place from Nov. '60, and the 107s were very much in evidence on these. The class had all been delivered to 66C (Hamilton), and worked services such as to Largs.

To overcome a shortage of Class 126 Inter-City sets at Ayr shed, two 107s were working from this depot in March '61.

Two sets were used for a 'Land Cruise' from Ayr to Keswick on Monday 15th May '61, calling at Kilmarnock to pick up. The passengers were allowed two hours at Carlisle on the outward trip, and then taken via Whitehaven to Keswick, where three hours were spent, returning via Penrith.

The cars were allocated to the ScR for use on local and interurban services along the densely populated industrial belt of southern Scotland between Ayr and Edinburgh. They were allocated to Hamilton (HM), Ayr (AY), Eastfield (ED) and Haymarket (HA).

Early examples of ScR set numbers are (in 1977): 153 (which included 52006) and 152 (including 52031). These two sets were still allocated to Hamilton, moving to Ayr in '82.

In '81 the new 6 digit set numbering was introduced, for the Class 107s this was 425 to 449 (there were by this time just 24 sets in traffic, and consequently 448 was omitted.

The infamous fire at Ayr depot on New Years Day destroyed nine DMUs, two of them Class 107s.

Trailer Sc59794 became M59794 in 1982 when it was allocated to Newton Heath (NH), and moving to Buxton (BX) where it operated in Class 108 set BX. 493.

Example formations in 1984 were 107 444 52005 / 59804 / 52031, 107 445 52006 / 59801 / 52015.

On the 12th May 1984, the first set in SPTE livery, 444, was used to ferry dignitaries to the opening of two new stations on the G&SW line at Kilmaurs and Auchinleck on 12/5/84.

Set 444 (formed 52005, nearest, 59804 & 52031) leaving Dalmeny and about to cross the Forth Bridge on the 17th Aug. 87 Robert Frise

The Class was the only true exclusively Scottish DMU, although there were still forays south of the Border. Most notable was in Aug '84 when Swindon Works had just outshopped 107 430 comprising 51990 / 59802 / 51803 (a class 101 car) in Strathclyde Orange PTE livery. En-route back to Ayr they were seconded by Tyseley due to a shortage of sets for the West Midlands. On the 24th it was used on the Cross City Line, and the following day worked a summer saturday service from Birmingham to Weston-Super Mare.

One set was involved in a side-swipe incident with a Class 86. More here.

The whole class was withdrawn for a few months in 1986 due to a technical problem.

Trailer 59794 returned north from the LMR in 1988, joining Eastfield's hybrid set 101 393 with 53216 (101 DMBS) and 53632 (108 DMS). The following year 101 393 was reformed using just Met-Camm cars, and in May '89 59574 was allocated to the ER at Neville Hill (NH). However this move was never more than on paper, as the vehicle was dumped at Thornton Yard. It was shown as moved to Eastfield in 1990, and was scrapped at MC Metals in July '91.

In 1989 the remaining 20 sets were transferred from Corkerhill to Eastfield and to avoid confusion with the 156 sets that replaced them they changed from their 107 4xx set numbers to the 107 7xx series (107 725 to 749 (with no 735, 738, 741, 742 or 748)). In July '91 the sets were moved en-mass again, from the west to the east with HA becoming their final home, and to avoid confusion with the new 158s they were renumbered into the 107 0xx series.
