Early '84, set 444 (52005 / 59804 / 52051)was the first DMU to be painted into the new Strathclyde PTE orange (officially called Strathclyde Red) and black livery. From 11/84 the other sets were progressively painted into the colours.

By 1989 fifteen sets were painted into the Strathclyde PTE livery of orange and black.

After the discontinuation of train indicators the roof mounted boxes were painted over in the roof colour.
