These Gloucesters were the pioneers of DMU preservation, 56301 being the earliest first generation unit to be enter preservation. It is now owned by the Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust. The North York. Moors Railway was the first preserved line to use DMUs, necessitated by the fire risk in forested areas between Goathland and Pickering, and they proved even more suited because of the better visibility from them in the scenic areas. 50341/56099 arrived in Easter '73 from Norwich and entered traffic later that year. In the time in-between 2 or 3-car Class 101s were hired in from BR. The set was painted into green & cream, a livery based on that used by LNER railcars in the '20s and '30s. 51118 plus another (anyone know what one?) soon joined them from Norwich, although the partner proved to be unsuitable so a replacement - 56097 - was obtained from Dundee in 1974. In 1979/80 they were repainted into dark green and cream with silver roof and yellow end panels. They fell into disuse and a change of ownership saw them moved to the Swanage Railway in 1985, although they saw little, if any use on this line, and so moved to the West Somerset Railway in August 1986. At this time just one set (51118 & 56097) was in working order and was initially on a five year lease to the line. They were quickly repainted into brown with cream window panels and full yellow ends, and put into traffic with the lines other sets, traffic at this time demanding 4 or even 6-car sets. The other set (50341 & 56099) was considered a long term restoration project and was purchased outright, although they have now been scrapped. 51118 / 56097 are now owned by the Llangollen Railcar Group and were asbestos stripped at the MRC in 1998. They are due to have some professional restoration work by the MRC staff before moving on to the Llangollen Rly. More details can be found on their web site. 56317 was owned by the now aborted Essex Traction Group and is being rebuilt with parts from Class 104 50539. The NRM had shown interest in 53355, which outlasted the other vehicles partnered with Class 105 53812. Lack of space prevented the pair from being claimed when withdrawn, so they were stored for a long period at Crewe Carriage shed. Unfortunately during this time the two asbestos free vehicles were badly vandalised and the substantial amount of repairs needed deterred the NRM from taking them. They were moved to Derby Etches Park at the end of 1990, then on to Vic Berry's in Leicester in early 1991. |
