Unknown date

Two three-car BRC&W sets arriving into London Euston station, date unknown. The W584 in the cab window and signs on many passenger windows indicate that this an excursion. M50500 leads which was a Cockshute vehicle and has Stoke-on-Trent is on the destination blind. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Class 104 DMU at Bedford

May 1985

A Class 104 at Bedford (Midland Road) on a service from Bletchley, in very damp weather, 05/85. The vehicles are thought to be M53500 + M53444. Hugh Llewelyn.

Class 104 DMU at Leyland

16th October 1986

Coupled to a Class 108, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53500 + M53472 was awaiting custom at Leyland whilst working a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on October 16th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

A pair of battered and work weary looking 30 year old BRC&W Class 104 DMUs stand in Manchester Piccadilly. M53500 is believed to be the vehicle on the Left. 27th February 1988. Andrew J Crowther.

On 19 October 1985 I was chatting to a friend at Leamington Spa who said that one of the last locomotives he was yet to see was stabled at March Yard and would I like a trip over there? On the way we called at Bedford where this class 104 comprising vehicles 53444 + 59206 + 53500 was stabled in the electrified siding alongside the virtually empty car park. Peter Tandy.

Having taken the East Lancashire route at Farington Curve Junction, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53472 & M53500 was accelerating to climb the gradient to nearby Farington Curve, whilst working a Preston to Colne service on May 3rd 1987. Both cars were withdrawn in 1989 and subsequently scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

Complete with bars fitted to the door droplights due to tight clearances inside Holme Tunnel on the Copy Pit route that connects Lancashire with West Yorkshire, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53472 & M53500 was passing Lostock Hall Junction with a Preston to Leeds service on May 7th 1987. Class 100 Gloucester DMBS 53355 + Class 105 Cravens DMCL 53812 twin stored in Crewe carriage shed sidings 22-7-89ish. The set was stored at this time pending preservation by the NRM but was vandalised and not thought worth saving. A fraction of Class 104 DMCL 53500 is seen on the left, this car stored 31/3/89 and withdrawn 17/5/89. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.

Carrying the set number N699 on its cab end, Cravens Class 105 DMU, DMS M53812 awaits its final journey to the scrap yard in the sidings south of Crewe Carriage shed. The date of the photo is either 18th or 19th July 1990. Behind is its partner of recent years, Class 100 M53355, and a couple of Class 104 vehicles, likely DMSLs M53500 and M53518. Paul James.
