Class 101 DMU at Bensham, Gateshead

5th March 1983

E50225 and E56388 pass Bensham, Gateshead with a service from the Tyne Valley line heading into Newcastle on 05/03/1983. They are about to head into a tunnel under the East Coast Main Line. Norwood Coking Plant, the site of which became part of the Gateshead Garden Festival seven years later in 1990, can be seen in the background. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 101 cars E56388 + E50225 at Scotswood, Newcastle heading westbound with a service for Haltwhistle on 14/05/1982. This section of track was closed on 04/10/1982, from which time all Tyne Valley trains travelled over the former freight lines via Norwood Junction - maintenance costs of the Scotswood Bridge were a major deciding factor in the closure of this section.
