Class 101 DMU at Helsby

9th July 1976

An unusual photo showing a very long formation formed neatly of Class 101 & 108 vehicles all carrying the short lived refurbishment livery. The occasion was a schools special from Scarborough to Chester returning through Helsby, 9/7/76. The 8-car formation was 50169/59306/59075/50161, 56191/50619 & 51230/56369. Anthony Griffiths.

With plates over the top / centre marker light positions, 53169 is seen at Battersby on the 27th May 1985. Jerry Glover.

Class 101 DMU at Sheffield

26th July 1986

A Class 101 DMU at Sheffield, 26/07/1986. DMS(L) 53169 was one of the more distinctive cars operating in the north of England in the 1980s, having a red buffer beam, Tyne & Wear PTE logo, plus the top and bottom centre lights on the cab front were not smoothed over as well as most others, leaving circular disc shapes Graeme Phillips Collection.

A Class 101 formed of DMCL 53169, TBSL 59075, and DMCL 53161 is seen in Carnforth station with the 12.31 Leeds - Lancaster on 4 May 1987. Dave Warby Collection.

Class 101 DMU at Newcastle

2nd October 1987

DMS E53169 is seen in what was then Newcastle platform 11, with Brough on its destination blind, on 2/10/87. Below the driver's window can be seen the letters BG, the depot code for Hull Botanic Gardens, which at the time maintained a fleet of DMUs for East Yorkshire. In most cases, the top and bottom centre lights were smoothed away without a trace upon refurbishment, but this cab front exhibits the welded plates. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Although not seen, 53169 of C995 is still carrying a Tyne & Weir PTE motif on its bodyside showing its Heaton Traction origins, when seen at Cardiff Central in 1990. Mac Winfield.

M50356 (and presumably M56111) arrives at Stalybridge with the 14:30 from Stockport (with a tail lamp at this end? maybe changing platforms?) on 31 August 1976. On the left the 12:13 Scarborough-Liverpool Lime Street departs with refurbished liveried E50169 on the rear. Robert Thomas.
