Class 116 DMU at St Andrews Junction, Birmingham

late August 1975

A Class 116 seen at St Andrews Junction, Birmingham, in late August 1975. The text on the inner end of DMS M50118 includes the word 'Triple' noting it is part of a three-car set. Michael Mensing.

Class 116 DMU at Langley Green

Set number: TY503

Two Class 116 DMUs at Langley Green with a Lichfield City service in November 1975. With broken glass in the top marker lamp M50118 leads in set TY503, presumably with 59003 + 50076. Michael Mensing.

Class 116 DMU at Longbridge

25th July 1987

Set number: TS503

The 14.13 Longbridge – Lichfield City sets off from Longbridge on its cross-Birmingham journey on 25 July 1987 formed of a class 116 unit comprising vehicles 53076, 59631 and 53118 (closest). The centre vehicle, a class 127 trailer, was one of only a handful of suburban DMUs still to retain its blue livery at this time. Robert28194.

The vehicle is mentioned in the following images:

DMU

Date: 21st July 1962

The 1.10pm Birmingham Snow Hill - Henley-in-Arden arriving at Small Heath on 21 July 1962. The Derby suburban triple set, numbered 303, has DMBS W50076 at the front, the other two vehicles are presumably trailer composite 59003 and DMS 50118. Michael Mensing.

DMU

Date: 1977

Set number: TS503

Refurbished Class 116 set TS503 (DMBS 50076 and presumably TC 59003 and DMS 50118) heading away from Wylde Green station in 1977. Michael Mensing.

DMU

Set number: TS503

Class 116 set TS503 (DMBS M50076 closest, presumably with M59003 + M50118) at Nuneaton on September 26, 1979. Steve Jones.

DMU

Date: 1986

Set number: T503

Most of the suburban passenger trains on the Birmingham Cross City Line were class 116 units but odds and ends turned up from time to time. On this occasion a BR blue centre coach (Class 127 TS 59631), probably one of the few remaining at this time in 1986, made a contrast with the standard blue and grey colour scheme (of presumably 53076 + 53118). I took this slide at Longbridge where most of the trains from either Lichfield or Four Oaks terminated and then crossed over and reversed for the return journey. The British Leyland car factory dominated the background. Following the collapse of BL the whole site was closed and is now a retail park while the railway infrastructure has changed with the advent of OHL electrification going to Redditch and Bromsgrove. Peter Tandy.
