NEWS

101 FAREWELL TOUR From a posting by Charlie Hume on the 101dmu Yahoo group: "Train enthusiasts will be out in force on Dec 21st to see the 101trains, built nearly 50 years ago retire - for good. Last year plans were made for these trains to be retired, but after a number of on-going issues surrounding the new fleet of 175's they remained in service. Fans of the 101's will be able to ride on one of the last trains on Dec 21st. The specially organised commemorative journey will go from Manchester Piccadilly (11:30) to Buxton and return to Manchester Piccadilly and onwards to Barrow in Furness, finally returning to Manchester Piccadilly (19:31).

To cope with the demand 200 people will be chosen from a draw to travel on this historic journey and be able to purchase one £25 ticket. The full journey lasting 8 hours will travel through Stockport, Bolton, Preston, Lancaster, Heysham Port, Carnforth, Grange-over-Sands and Ulverston.

To apply for your special ticket please write to '101's Farewell', First North Western's Communications Department, First Floor, Bridgewater House, Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 6LT which must arrive by December 1st 2003. Please enclose your daytime telephone number and e-mail address and if you are chosen from the draw you will be contacted regarding payment details. For safety reasons you will need to be in possession of one of the commemorative tickets or you will not be able to travel on this train. Please note no other tickets will be valid on the special service."

FURTHER 101s BOUGHT The East Kent Railway have acquired 53256 and 54343, arriving at Sheperdswell on the 6/7th November.

PRESERVATION

CPPR CLASS 121 The railway's "bubble car" 55023 has underwent a complete external refurbishment and repainting at Cranmore on the East Somerset Railway. The work was accomplished to an exceptionally high standard by Cranmore Traincare and Maintenance Services, the specialist refurbishment business of the East Somerset Railway.

To mark the completion of work there was a handback ceremony at Cranmore on the 22nd November (right, picure CPPR) It will return to Chinnor in December.

EARM 101 On 51213 the rubberised wall covering above each of the luggage racks has been removed to reveal the original Formica, there were no scratches on the Formica - luckily the coating was only glued on. Wooden strips have been manufactured to replicate the horizontal strips on these Formica panels.

The fluorescent lights have all been removed in both saloons together with all damaged ceiling panels. The original tungsten light wooden supports have been relocated to their correct positions and a new wiring loom installed,

The exterior repaint into Rail Blue is planned for the New Year with a completion date before Easter 2004.

Right: an impressive line up at the East Anglian Railway Museum on the 11th October. L to R are 50599, 54358, 51213 & 51505. Their website has a page on their 101s and 108s. Mark Cornell

Mark Cornell would like to hear from anyone has any interior pictures of Class 101's before refurbishment. They also have genuine complete Class 101 fluorescent light fittings they can exchange for a donation to group funds. dupa@earm.co.uk.
