SUPPLIERS

EXHAUSTER BEARINGS Following on from the request in Railcar 81 for details of the bearings in a DMU vacuum exhauster.
The details are:-
Ball bearing NTN RLS7
Roller bearing RHP LRJ 7/8
These are available from most stockists e.g. BSL - but the seal is more difficult. Also try From Barnwells of Birmingham Tel 0121 429 8011, Barnwells Part No SD19311862 NBR04. Thanks to Brett Rodgers & Chris Bull for the info.

GASKETS Chris Bull reports - we needed to overhaul a leaking fuel injection pump for a Leyland 680 engine. Our local servicing man couldn't get the gaskets he said. A quick call to the Severn Valley Fount of Knowledge Trevor Daw bought a telephone number for Bob Beck Diesels of Leamington Spa - Tel 01926 888110. Bob has kindly sourced the gaskets seals etc. and posted them on in less than two weeks. Excellent service.

JUMPER SOCKET LID SEALS These are now in stock and available for £1 each plus p&p. Contact Stuart Mackay for details.

On the right can be seen one of the overhauled jumper socket lids for the Wickham. It was cleaned back to bare metal and primed, a new pin and spring fitted (for sale from Chris Bull) and finished of with the new seal.

PRESERVATION

GLOUCESTER RAILCAR TRUST At the Swindon & Cricklade Railway, the remaining rust areas have now been removed from Class 119 DMBS 51074 and the areas prepared for welding. The platform-facing side has been undercoated and then sanded back, ready for 2 topcoats of mid-brunswick green, to act as a long-term "temporary" protection. The next stage is to swap places with 51104, so similar work can be done, then work on the interior of one or both. Hopefully the welding and painting on 51104 will be quicker, building on the learning on 51074.

MRC - IRIS Apart from a couple of small items, Chris Lings has completed the restoration inside the No.1 cab of Iris (79900) and has just started on the second. The vehicle had lost it's Yellow Diamond jumpers before its preservation days. It was thought that it would be more useful if the vehicle could operate with others, and so blue square sockets have been unobtrusively fitted under the buffers. The connection to the existing wiring proved to be quite a challenge - especially as we only had a basic yellow diamond wiring diagram, Iris had been altered considerably from this in its departmental use, and no-one knew exactly how the yellow diamond system worked! However from the limited testing done so far it seems to have been a success.

RUDDINGTON The 116/117 set and the 108 were shunted into their own siding and made ready for winter. Attention is turning to DMBS 53926 and the refitting of the seating now that the ceilings are replaced. The cab is going back together slowly now that suitable coverings have been sourced. Following on from the photo of the damaged 52060 on the Railcar web site, the other Class 108 cars on site 53645 & 53926 have also had substantial damage in their lives, can anyone supply further information?

On the right the Class 116 and 108 are seen out on testing runs in Summer 2002.

GREEN PAINT

John Down has had trouble determine what shade of green should be used on his Class 117 at the Pontypool and Blaenavon Rly. He has made a page on his website called 'Getting the right green (Technical Bulletin)' about his findings, at www.pontypool-and-blaenavon.co.uk/DMU117.
