Malcolm Clements adds: "The 110 is leaving
Huddersfield for Leeds, or possibly Wakefield. The chimney
is the Huddersfield waste incinerator. There were 4
running tracks on the viaduct plus the shunting line
connecting the station yard to the much larger goods yard
at Hillhouse (the site of the former steam shed) - at
the other end of the viaduct. That yard was
"famous" (to those who cared) as the coal drops
had (and still have!) tramway track beneath them laid to
Huddersfield's almost unique 4 feet 7 and 3/4 inches. The
Corporation tramways had 2 electric coal wagons which
took coal over the municipal tramway system to Mills on
the other side of town. The gauge was set 3/4" less
than standard so that regular railway wagons could run on
their flanges in the groove of the tramway track. This
never happened (as it did in Glasgow - where shipyards
were connected over the street system) but the coal wagons
ran for many years. There is a photo in Roy Brookes book -
A history of Huddersfield Tramways. I believe Portsmouth
also shared the same gauge, but know nothing of their
system. I have photos of the tram track in the goods yard,
taken c1969.
